Worcester’s Shrewsbury and Hamilton streets to get complete makover in 2016
“Tension over how to bring high-speed Internet to rural, unserved parts of the state boiled over Monday night in Greenfield, as scores of WiredWest supporters were denied entrance to an “informational meeting” hosted by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute.
“Mass. Broadband, a division of the Mass. Technology Collaborative, is charged with investing $40 million to help build a network in western Massachusetts towns that don’t have high-speed Internet service.
“WiredWest, comprised of representatives from each of its member towns, proposes to make use of state and local tax dollars to bring broadband to the hilltowns for the purposes of business, education, property values, and quality of life. Conflict between the two groups has been brewing for months.
“Mass. Broadband on Dec. 1 issued a bombshell statement, saying it would withhold state funding from WiredWest without significant changes to its business plan and agreement with member towns. The statement touched off a firestorm of criticism from WiredWest.
“I’m the clerk of WiredWest, I’m on the executive committee; and I can’t get in,” said Jean Atwater-Williams of Sandisfield. “I drove an hour and a half to get here.”
“I’m a member of the New Salem Board of Selectmen, and I can’t get in,” said Wayne Hochey. “This is an example of the process we’ve had to put up with from MBI.”

“Marine studies have shown that the microbeads, which are smaller than a pinhead, easily evade the water filtration process. The microplastic pieces then flow into streams and lakes, where they are mistaken for food by fish, causing significant internal damage as well as the possibility of ingestion by humans. A recent study from Oregon State University estimated that as many as 8 billion microbeads per day are currently being discharged into America’s waterways and aquatic habitats.”
“Cresta’s crimes — which he confessed to Crowley before he died — included an $800,000 Brink’s truck heist and the theft of $100,000 worth of quarters from Boston parking meters. He stole jewels, rare coins, furs and even the food he served at a diner he owned.”
“City officials said Coleman died at the hospital of an allergic reaction to a sedative.
CBS Chicago obtained data showing the TASER was used on Coleman between seven and 16 times.
Coleman’s family has filed a civil lawsuit against the city, alleging that the mentally unstable man, a University of Chicago graduate, was mistreated while in police custody.
They called police in 2012 after Coleman began acting erratically at their home. Family members say he should have been transported to a hospital, not a police precinct.
The man’s father, Percy Coleman, told the Chicago Tribune that he an officer brushed off pleas from the family to take his son to a hospital.
“We don’t do hospitals, we do jail,” Percy Coleman recalled the officer saying. Coleman is the former chief of the nearby Ford Heights police department, and a former co-chair of Chicago’s Republican party.“
