“Boston was one of the first cities in the country to detect a case of the virus. On Feb. 1, a student at the University of Massachusetts Boston who had recently traveled from Wuhan, China, tested positive. For over a month, his was the only confirmed case in the city. But according to the Northeastern projections, more than 100 people in Boston had likely been exposed to the virus by mid-February. By March 1, five days before the city changed its official count to four coronavirus cases, the virus may have been transmitted 2,335 times.”

“Now, a team of scientists from Northeastern University and the University of Utah, funded by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER), are working to unlock the forest’s secrets, including its potential to harbor new compounds for medicine and biotechnology.”
“Previous work by the research team on bacteria in shipworms has resulted in at least one antibiotic being under investigation as a drug to treat parasitic infections, and the overall biopharmaceutical potential for these bacteria is high. Drug compounds produced by symbiotic microbes are less likely to display toxicity toward animals than free-living bacteria, as these molecules have essentially been “pre-screened” by their animal hosts. They can be reproduced under lower temperatures and less harsh conditions than current industrial processes, meaning a potential cost savings for industrial applications. Additionally, the wood at the site off the Alabama coast has lain submerged and buried in a deep layer of sand and sediment for thousands of years, creating an isolated and unique habitat for discovery of unusual microbes and molecules.”

“In a replay of the men’s Beanpot title game one night earlier, Northeastern (1) trailed Boston University in the early-going of the Women’s Beanpot final, (2) recovered to hold the lead in the third period, (3) braced defensively when the Terriers pulled their goaltender in the closing two minutes, and (4) were dragged into overtime after BU scored a deflating goal in the frantic final seconds.
“Hold on, it gets better.
“Northeastern converted a power play in the second overtime to win 4-3 Tuesday on an unlikely goal by defender Lauren MacInnis after 21 minutes and 3 seconds of sudden-death hockey—a result that mirrored the extra-man, double-overtime goal that had been scored Monday by defender Jordan Harris.”

Two goals by BU in the first period were followed by four from Northeastern in the second. BU responded two minutes into the third … that drew them within 4-3, and ignited a slow burn of escalation that felt altogether explosive by the end of regulation.
BU’s urgency grew with each unsuccessful charge at Northeastern’s Craig Pantano, whose 40 saves overall would earn him the Eberly Award as top goaltender of the Beanpot. … As the final seconds were unscrolled, BU’s Jake Wise, with no space for error, feinted a shot from the right while delivering a brief cross that Trevor Zegras controlled while charging from the other side of goal to finish just in front of Pantano’s dive.
The game had been equalized 1.2 seconds before the Huskies would have celebrated.
The men won … Monday on a long slap shot in the second overtime by Jordan Harris, a sophomore defenseman. His climactic goal set off an extended roar 79 minutes and 33 seconds into what was the second-longest Beanpot final in front of a tournament-record audience of 17,850.

“This award recognizes one student chapter each year who exemplifies EWB-USA’s mission through efficient organization, effective fundraising, and an engaged student body. The group has recently worked on projects in Guatemala, Panama, and Uganda.”
“This is the second time Northeastern’s EWB has won this prestigious award, having first been selected in 2014. This year’s selection saw them chosen from a total of 163 student chapters.”
