China didn’t warn public of likely pandemic for 6 key days

“Top Chinese officials secretly determined they were likely facing a pandemic from a new coronavirus in mid-January, ordering preparations even as they downplayed it in public. During that time, the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the disease, hosted a mass banquet for tens of thousands of people and millions began traveling for Lunar New Year celebrations.”

Mozilla and Firefox

January 2020:

“Mozilla lays off 70 employees as its revenue declines”

“Mozilla still gets most of its money from global browser search partnerships, but its falling popularity has seen revenue decline in recent years, forcing it to look toward other sources.”

“While Firefox is the second-most-popular browser behind Chrome, the gap is significant, with Google’s browser taking over 67 percent of the market share, while Mozilla’s product is on just 9 percent. The number of Firefox installations has been declining in recent times, too, dropping from around 312 million three years ago to 253 million today.”

April 2020:

A love letter to the social workers on the front lines of COVID-19

My dad is a social worker in a nursing home.

“And yet, social workers are often last in line for PPEs, for extra resources, for accolades. They are missing from the memes that say we should forgive all student loans, give raises to all the medical professionals when this is over, despite the fact that they are paid among the lowest of the essential health professionals. Still, they come up with resources out of nowhere, through a search of their electronic Rolodex of community agencies and personal contacts with whom they’ve nurtured relationships for a time just like this.”
