Why Google, Not Facebook, Knows Your Darkest Secrets

“It’s Google, the social also-ran, that knows your real secrets. It knows the things you wouldn’t ask your friends. It knows things you can’t ask your spouse. It knows the things you haven’t asked your doctor yet. It knows things that you can’t ask anyone else and that might not have been asked at all before Google existed. Google’s servers are a repository of the developed world’s darkest and most heartbreaking secrets, a vast closet lined with millions of digital skeletons that, should they escape, would spare nobody.”

Bouncy Ball Camera Gives a Safe Preview of Dangerous Areas

Picture of Bouncy Ball Camera

“The Bounce camera is a bouncing ball-shaped device with six embedded cameras. Throw one into a dangerous situation and it snaps two images per second and beams them back to a laptop on the outside. The associated software quickly stitches the images together into a panoramic view of what’s happening inside.”

Gary McKinnon extradition to US blocked by Theresa May

“This will mean that where prosecution is possible in both the UK and in another state, the British courts will be able to bar prosecution overseas if they believe it is in the interests of justice to do so.”

The Sharp Shape of Frozen Water

Frozen water droplets take on a whole new shape when they freeze: Instead of staying round, they form a pointy tip, and eventually sprout a tiny forest of ice crystals on their surface.

In order to observe these effects, researchers dripped tiny beads of water on a plate kept at a chilly -20°C. In the 18 seconds that it took the 4-millimeter-diameter droplets (top row) to solidify, researchers snapped photos of the water freezing from the bottom up.

During the final stage of freezing, the ice drops developed a pointy tip (middle row), which continued to grow and eventually formed delicate ice crystals on the surface, the team reported last month in Physics of Fluids. Researchers believe the unusual pointy tip is caused by the vertical expansion of the ice combined with the surface tension on remaining liquid.

Once frozen, the sharp tip of the drop attracts water vapor from the air, and produces treelike ice crystals (bottom row).

Gainesville State high school football gets the best gift of all: hope

“Gainesville is a maximum-security correctional facility 75 miles north of Dallas. Every game it plays is on the road.”

“So [home-team coach] Hogan had this idea. What if half of our fans—for one night only—cheered for the other team? He sent out an email asking the Faithful to do just that. “Here’s the message I want you to send:” Hogan wrote. “You are just as valuable as any other person on planet Earth.”

“Hogan said, “Imagine if you didn’t have a home life. Imagine if everybody had pretty much given up on you. Now imagine what it would mean for hundreds of people to suddenly believe in you.”

“It was a strange experience for boys who most people cross the street to avoid. “We can tell people are a little afraid of us when we come to the games,” says Gerald, a lineman who will wind up doing more than three years. “You can see it in their eyes. They’re lookin’ at us like we’re criminals. But these people, they were yellin’ for us! By our names!”

“After the game, both teams gathered in the middle of the field to pray and that’s when Isaiah surprised everybody by asking to lead. “We had no idea what the kid was going to say,” remembers Coach Hogan. But Isaiah said this: “Lord, I don’t know how this happened, so I don’t know how to say thank You, but I never would’ve known there was so many people in the world that cared about us.”

Santa Declares Bankruptcy

Due to a surplus of stupendously bad children and the ever-increasing price of coal, Santa has been forced to declare bankruptcy. Asked for a quote, Santa had the following to say:

Well, we’ve been trying like heck to avoid this for the past few years but we just can’t ignore the sad truth that this will be our last Christmas.

We just got our latest bank statements and, after reconciling with projected costs through the end of this year, we can’t see a future for Claus, Inc. We considered buyouts, IPOs and taking out a second mortgage on the North Pole but decided we’d rather shut ‘er down than see the old girl fall under outside control either now or in the future.

We’re all terribly sad to see it go this way; it’s been a great ride. We’d like to thank everyone that made it possible for us to stay in business for so long. If anyone knows of a good home for nine immortal reindeer, please let us know.
