Decade-long effort to preserve Worcester State Hospital clock tower concludes this week with ribbon-cutting ceremony

“The Worcester State Lunatic Asylum, the original name of the Worcester State Hospital, was the first state-owned hospital in the country to treat mental illnesses. In 1870, construction began on Belmont Street for a new campus to be renamed Worcester State Hospital. The campus included a four-story, 1,000-foot-long administration building anchored by a central 135-foot-tall Victorian Gothic clock tower.”
